Part of my job as Biodiversity Advisor for the local council was to design a large interpretation sign for visitors. The situation I put them in to explore that dynamic came to me while I was writing Roswell. Now there was a character with baggage! The idea came about because of fan reaction to the newest member of the team, Vala Mal Doran.
